How Do You Choose A Scrap Yard?

When choosing a scrap yard, many people make the mistake of simply looking for the best prices in the area. Whilst this is certainly important, there are a number of other factors that you should consider. We have outlined just some of these in the list below; hopefully thus information gives you something to think about when choosing which yard you would like to do business with in the future, ensuring that you have the best experience possible.

  • Atmosphere
Some yards are quite sophisticated with the latest technology or a fancy truck scale. Others are a bit more primitive, in that they still have a dirt lot or use handwritten receipts. Determine the atmosphere that you prefer and choose a recycler to match.

  • Hours
Do you want to make deliveries first thing on a Monday morning or during your lunch break on a Thursday? Knowing your local yard’s hours can help you to determine whether you can drop in at a time that is convenient for you or if you’ll have to find someone else.

  • Location
One important factor when choosing a yard is its location. Finding one that is closer to where you live or work will mean less driving time and less money spent on fuel. If you’re working away from your usual area, it might be an idea to search for a local recycler for the same reason.

  • Loyalty
It is important for many people that they establish a good relationship with their scrap yard. Being loyal to a particular recycler can have its own benefits, such as tier pricing and VIP specials. Once you’ve found a good one, be sure that you stick with them.

  • Prices
Regardless of all the other factors discussed here, the prices offered by the yard will usually be the largest deciding factor when making your choice. It’s important to remember that prices can change daily, so the best deal is unlikely to remain the same.

  • Specials
Some people also like to choose a yard based on the specials they run and the materials you have to offload. Often times, recyclers offer weekly or monthly specials for things like aluminium cans or wiring. Check to see what specials or events are being held soon.

At the end of the day, the choice of which scrap yard you would like to do business with is a completely personal one. If you want to go to the one with the highest prices but the worst purported customer service, that is entirely your prerogative. If you would prefer to lose out on a little profit in order to build a lasting relationship with a quality yard, that is also up to you. In the end, all of the scrap gets recycled and reused in the same way.
