Welding with copper in five easy steps
18 January 2010
As we all know welding and working with a metal product like brass, aluminium or copper is very different than working with steel. There are some significant considerations to take into account in order to use the metal properly and to produce an accurate and professional weld.
Here\'s some great advice about working with copper, laid out in five easy steps:
1) Use copper-nickel of at least 70% copper to make a stronger weld.
2) Ensure that all traces of sulphur, lead and phosphorous have been removed to avoid cracking. Also check for signs of grease or oil.
3) For copper that\'s three millimetres or under employ a square butt preparation.
4) Unlike welding with steel, the included angle should be quite wide (above 70 degrees for example).
5) Use a down-hand technique if you can when welding with copper, as this usually involves less skill and precision and as such less mistakes.
Also never be afraid to ask your metal dealers for advice about using the products and metals they supply you with. Chances are they know the metal better than you do so their hints and tips could be invaluable.
